YVD for Beginners! - By CaptainHollyShort

Using YVD

Using YVD can be a complicated process. This page will make it all a lot simpler and a much more enjoyable experience.

The Cryptic and MS-DOSish chat.

N00b-irc is the chat program that YVD uses. Click the Yugioh Virtual desktop icon and hit "Chat" to use it. It is complex. For starters, register as a user at the xerocreative.com forums. You will have a username in chat. If you want a different name in chat, type /nick (desired name) and your nick will become the one you specified. You can register any nick by changing your name to it and typing /register (E-mail) (desired password). Follow the on screen instructions to check your mail. Copy the line in the e-mail and paste it into chat and hit enter. Your nick should be registered now. NOTE THAT WHEN TYPING COMMANDS, DO NOT INCLUDE PARENTHESIS. For example, only type /nick nickname instead of /nick (nickname).

Now that you have a username, you need to join a channel to chat. Start by reading the rules at http://www.xerocreative.com/index.php?goto=chat. Joining a channel is simple. The most basic one is #yvd. Type /join #yvd. This will pop-up a new window of the #yvd channel. You talk by typing a message in the white box at the bottom and hit Enter or Return; whatever it's called on your keyboard. =P If you know of another channel name, type /join (channel name here). It will open the same way #yvd did.

You can use chat to find opponents to duel, or just to chat with other members. Remember to do this in a way that respects the rules and tells the other opponent what you want. EXAMPLE: "I'm looking for a duel, ADV/8.6 can host with Hamachi." would tell others you play the Advanced Format, with YVD 8.6 or higher, and you use Hamachi to connect. You'll know what you type as you get more used to YVD.

There are also special users called ops and SOPs. These users are like mods, have highers status than most users, and can kick or ban people and set modes, so be nice to them and they won't kick you. >_>

Last, you can PM someone simply by double clicking their name either in chat or on the list of names on the right of the room. You do not have to follow the ordinary rules or workings of chat in PMs and can post IPs, channel names, and other such stuff because it is a t the discretion of a user to answer a PM or not. PMs otherwise work like chatrooms.

Clans

Clans are groups of people who duel, have tournaments, and do other fun stuff on their channel. Most require you to take a test to join; usually dueling and beating one of their members in a match, and there are too many clans and user set up channels to count. If you have mIRC, use /list to list them all.

Chat Commands and channel names.

These are basic commands and channel names for n00b-irc.
/me or /action - makes text purple and puts your nick at the beginning of text you type.
/register email password - registers a nick.
/msg PMs a user.
/help - displays list of commands.#xcd - ladder tournament channel
#yvd - YVD channel.
#helpdesk - help channel.
#abuse - abuse channel.

Using YVD, the deckbuilder, and Log reader.

Click the Yugioh Virtual Desktop icon and hit "Duel". The Deck Shop and YVD desktop will appear. Build your deck and side deck in here and save it. If the deck meets the current rules and regulations (don't forget to select a ban list!) when you click "Use This Deck", it will load into YVD and the Deck Shop will disappear.Using YVD is easy. Click Listen if your opponent knows your IP and is waiting to connect to you. Click Connect if your opponent is listening and you know their IP. At this time, you can choose to log your duel. I reccomend it. If you are listening to someone or connecting to someone and the connection fails, and everything else is set up correct, chances are you (listening) or your opponent (connecting) have either a firewall or a router. You can take the hard path and find out if you have either and configure them, or simply download Hamachi, which you will learn about later. Once the connection goes through, decide who will go first. It is best if you read ALL of the ingame commands and menus and learn what every clickable item on the field and in the window margins do BEFORE you connect so you learn to duel properly. Phases do not need to be entered but help smooth the transition of gameplay. If you want more specific information about all dueling commands, go to the Dueling YVD 101 page. Using the Log Reader is a simple task. Open the Log Reader and click "open log". Find the log file you want and click Open. It should show up on screen. If you want more information about the eader, click About.
